High Flight

The wonderful poem by John Gillespie, Jr., a World War 2 test pilot, was written on September 3,1941 after Magee flew a high altitude test on the new model Spitfire V. As he climbed upwards he was struck by the beauty of flight and wrote the poem in his head as he "reached out and touched the face of God". Sadly, just three months later, on December 11, 1941, Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee, Jr., was killed. The Spitfire he was testing collided with an Oxford Trainer over Tangmere, England. check here fore more of his bio.
